Communications Officer

Gloucestershire - Home-based

The purpose of this role is to be responsible for the delivery of the VCS Alliance communications strategy, which forms a key part of our business plan. We want the postholder to contribute new thinking and develop new ways of working to support the delivery of our strategy, and push the organisation forwards in the way it engages with key stakeholders.

The cornerstone of our business plan is effective communications, as the voluntary and community sector within Gloucestershire is complex and diverse. The successful candidate will be someone who is able to engage with different audiences clearly, persuasively and respectfully, reflecting a true understanding of different communication needs.

The VCS Alliance is strengthening its reputation as an authority on the sector in Gloucestershire. Key to this is building our membership, increasing engagement and utilising multiple communication platforms. Although we have established social media platforms, we are seeking to increase engagement and generate new audiences.

The postholder will be responsible for producing, designing and distributing all external communications, including our bulletins, social media, press releases, reports, and our website. This will involve working with the team and independently gathering information from multiple sources to produce relevant and interesting copy for a range of stakeholder groups.

An early important project for the successful candidate will be to help create a specification for a new VCS Alliance website. This will involve finding and commissioning a quality website developer, and managing the process of implementing the new website.

Key Responsibilities and General Duties


• Plan and implement an annual communications plan for all member communications and wider marketing and PR
• Contribute new ideas to the communications strategy to support wider more effective engagement
• Produce impact reports and monitoring and evaluation documents for stakeholders


• Research and implement digital solutions to improve marketing reach and reporting capacity
• Update our website using our content management system
• Manage the redesign of the company website including ideas for the look and feel, functionality and sourcing providers
• Build engagement and establish the VCS Alliance as an authority through selected social media channels
• Advise on new media channels that can be used to increase engagement and be impactful to specific target audiences

External Communications

• Create and distribute our communication bulletins to the sector and monitor and evaluate key metrics. This will include our news and information bulletin, funding bulletin, training bulletin and volunteering newsletter
• Redesign all communications to create a ‘house style’ and reinforce VCS Alliance brand
• Establish the VCS Alliance as an authority through articles in the local press, features on local radio, and through selected social media channels


• Enable two-way access to effective communications, gathering views and information sharing within the VCS, local networks/forums and partnerships using a variety of means as appropriate e.g. through website, social media and regular email bulletins

Key Experience/ skills:

• Qualifications or Experience:A minimum of 3 years’ experience of working in a communications role.
• Expertise in using social media, digital media and creating copy. Experience of designing a range of online and physical publications.
• An ability to communicate clearly in written form and verbally.
• Experience of using digital communication platforms and writing and distributing digital communications
• Experience of working with General Data Protection Regulations protocols
• Experience of using social media and digital communication platforms
• Ability to work with minimum supervision and manage own time
• Willing to learn new things
• Experience of using Microsoft Office, Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail, internet, and databases.
• High degree of confidentiality when handling sensitive information


• Enthusiasm and commitment to the Voluntary and Community Sector
• Experience of using content management systems, MailChimp, Google Doc and online survey tools.
• Experience of working in, or in support of, local or other statutory authorities
• Experience of marketing and PR.

Salary: £24,000 per annum pro rata
