Trainee Roofer

Cheltenham

This position will require the candidate to undertake a formal Roof Tiling Foundation Course.

The role purpose is to work with the Repairs Supervisors and Resource Allocator to provide effective and efficient roofing service to enable the delivery of Responsive Repairs.

The main duty is to undertake on a day to day basis general roofing duties on behalf of CBH.

The role will be responsible to:

• Undertake on a day to day basis general roofing duties on behalf of CBH at occupied and unoccupied homes.
• Undertake repairs and renewals of slate, tile, interlocking sheet, mineral felt, corrugated metal and asphalt roofing systems including repairs to the substrate, including timberwork and masonry repairs.
• Redress, repair, replace and repoint any lead flashings to roof penetrations upstands or valleys including dressing and pointing.
• Undertake the removal redressing and rebidding and pointing of ridge and hip tiles as required including the fixing of clipping of ridges and fitting of hip irons.
• Cut out and re point verges as necessary
• Renew and replace dry verge components as required.
• Re-fix, clip and secure any slipped slates or tiles as necessary.
• Carryout fencing and gate repair/replacements when roofing tasks are unavailable
• Carryout repair and minor brickwork repair, paving work, re-bedding manholes when roofing tasks are unavailable.
• Assisting all tradespersons to complete roofing responsive repairs.
• Day to day responsibility for vehicles, plant and materials under the direction of Repairs Supervisors and the Repairs Logistics Officer.
• Load truck with waste materials when required.
• Undertaking roof repairs to pitched and flat roofs complying with CBH’s working procedures.
• Remove waste from loft spaces where required
• Garden / shed / outbuilding roof repairs where required.
• Following completion of the roofing repair report any defects still evident at the property to the Repairs Supervisor
• Assess site conditions and build PASMA tower scaffold to enable access to roof defects.
• To assist the Repairs Logistics Officer in ensuring the depot compound area where spare roofing materials are stored is organised and kept tidy.
• Ensuring the vehicle you are responsible for is kept clean, tidy, that any issues are promptly reported.
• To effectively plan the days duties to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
• Carryout duties ensuring the safety of the workforce, contractors, tenants, leaseholders and general public.
• To work with the rest of the team to continuously improve the Repairs service.
• To stop traffic, ensure safety of members of the public through signs, cones, verbal communication when the hoist is in use.
• Undertake training to demonstrate competency in the role namely, ladder training, scaffold training, erection of PASMA tower scaffold training, needle stick training, manual handling and corporate training as required such as safeguarding, domestic abuse and equality and diversity training as requires including all updates.
• Support the aims and objectives of CBH.
• To assist with other duties as required to enable delivery of responsive repairs.

In order to carry out this role it is essential that you have:

• Working knowledge of Health and Safety Regulations, including Waste, Awareness of Asbestos Regulations.
• Knowledge of Verge preparation, hunching and pointing preparation, mortar mixing, bedding, laying and finishing techniques.
• Knowledge of techniques and materials to carryout effective lead flashing repair and pointing.
• Knowledge of guttering and downpipe system fixtures and fittings.
• Knowledge of loft insulation best practice to ensure effective coverage and ventilation is maintained.
• Knowledge of ladder safety and the ability to work safely from a ladder.
• Knowledge of Working at Height Regulations.
• Knowledge of PASMA
• Ability to accurately use a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant); communicate business information, job details, order materials and confirm work completed on the PDA
• Ability to work as part of a team and contribute effectively to teamwork.
• Ability to demonstrate a logical approach to problem solving.
• Demonstrate a mature ability to undertake a diverse range of tasks.
• Clear understanding of the needs of customer care.
• Ability to listen and understand information to translate into the work place task.
• Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, tenants, leaseholders and members of the public.
• Ability to recognise concerns as part of Safeguarding children and safeguarding adults and report these promptly to the Repairs team.
• Contribute effectively to team meetings, through 1-2-1 discussions and the annual appraisal process.
• Ability to work effectively and diplomatically with the Head of Housing Services and colleagues.
• Willingness to work outside
• Working in confined spaces (loft areas)
• Manual handling experience
• Awareness of safe loading of vehicles
• Awareness of van roadworthiness
• Current Full driving licence
• Competency in driving van sized vehicles in a town environment

It is also desirable that you have:

• Experience of roofing or willingness to attend formal training courses as necessary
• Experience of working in a Social Housing environment
• Awareness of the risks of working at height within the working environment
• Willingness to work outside normal working hours in the event of an emergency
• Willingness to undertake further training to support the Responsive Repairs Service
• Current CSCS card
