Site Apprentice


Contract:  2 Year Fixed Term Contract

An opportunity has arisen to join the friendly team at Ribston Hall High School as Site Apprentice at an exciting phase of the school site development, as building work continues, within the school grounds on a new science block.  This position is full time reporting to the Site Manager, working alongside a small but growing site team, which includes the Facilities Assistant, Cleaners and Lettings Caretakers.

This is an ideal opportunity for a practical, enthusiastic, and energetic person to join us and learn all the skills required to manage a school site, ensuring operational effectiveness whilst carrying out the day-to-day running of the school site. The role will enable the successful candidate to learn about Health & Safety systems, building maintenance, site security, moving and handling of objects and deliveries, working at height and grounds maintenance. It is important that the successful candidate can demonstrate a sense of pride in their surroundings ensuring that the school is kept clean and well maintained to provide a pleasant and inspiring environment for students and staff to learn and work.

A good standard of general education as well as confidence in the use of IT systems are desirable for this role. Training will be provided both in-house and by Gloucestershire College where you will be expected to attend for one day per week to gain an accredited level two qualification as a Property Maintenance Operative.

Hours are expected to be worked between the hours of 7.30am and 6pm daily, and an ability to work flexibly on occasion is required.  Day release to attend college is expected to be each Friday during term time.

Job Description

Site/Maintenance Apprentice
£222 to £259 per week, 37 hours per week, all year round

Job Purpose
1. To apply knowledge and understanding of basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, plastering, decorating and general maintenance to assist with ensuring the school buildings and external areas are kept in a safe, clean, secure and in working condition.

Main Duties & Responsibilities
a. To carry out repairs to the fabric of the building for example repairs to walls, doors, door frames and plaster damage
b. To carry out repairs to plumbing and drainage system for example repairs to leaking taps or unblocking drains
c. To maintain electrical distribution and undertake safe repair of electrical installation to legal requirements for example replacing plugs, lighting and fuses.
d. To maintain plant, safety systems and sustainable practices
e. To maintain grounds and external fabrication of a building such as drainage and guttering
f. To safely use hand tools and power tools as required in carrying out your duties
g. To assist with the day to day running of the site, general porterage, daily tasks and emergency response.
h. To assist with site Health and Safety compliance.

a. To demonstrate and understand the importance of the control of resources and stock
b. To understand and demonstrate the principles of Planned Preventative Maintenance
c. To understand how to prepare for refurbishment or deep clean of equipment or surfaces

a. To provide first and immediate response to emergencies and site issues to ensure the Health and Safety of all site users and fault finding and diagnosis
   b. To optimising property condition and quality and ensure cost effectiveness
   c. To understand and demonstrate the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace.
   d. To record and report information accurately either internally or externally
   e. To support the process of control and distribution of resources and stock
