Lead School & Community Worker

Gloucester

DURATION OF POST: 12 month fixed term (with potential to extend subject to funding)

HOURS: Full time 37.5 hours per week

YG’s core business hours are Monday-Friday 9am-5pm however due to the nature and pressing need of our work all YG staff may be required to complete work outside of these hours including residential, weekend and evening work.

This role may require regular residential work.

Where the proper performance of your duties requires that you work excessive hours, you will be allowed time off work in lieu (TOIL). Residential activity should be completed within the contract and TOIL will not be given for this.

SALARY: £21,000 to £23,000 subject to experience

HOLIDAY: 25 days per annum plus bank holidays (Pro Rata)

PENSION: Auto enrolment pension with employer contribution

RESPONSIBLE TO: Operations Manager

LOCATION: Base location Greyfriars House, Greyfriars, Gloucester, GL1 1TS with frequent travel in Gloucestershire and occasional national travel.

JOB SUMMARY

To increase the number of young people participating in programmes delivered by Young Gloucestershire by driving regular school and community engagement. You will plan, design and deliver bespoke programmes that better meet the needs of underrepresented groups including young people with special educational needs (SEN), those not in employment education or training (NEET) or in alternative education settings and ethnic minorities. Take a lead on the delivery of the Be Internet Citizens programme to a minimum of 600 young people. Deliver of a variety of school sessions including EmpowHer and Mental Health.

MAIN DUTIES

  • To lead on the development, implementation and design of programmes to underrepresented target groups in schools or community settings.
  • Plan, design, implement and deliver bespoke programmes to maximize young person participation across the county.
  • Take a lead on the delivery of the Be Internet Citizen programme to 600 young people.
  • Plan and deliver all aspects of the programmes including residentials, and producing programme resources.
  • Work within budgets as agreed with the line manager.
  • To line manage staff as and when required
  • To liaise with key stakeholders including school, parents, commissioner and others as required
  • Managing a caseload of primary and secondary schools across the county, to promote the programmes and services we have available.
  • Build relationships within the local community including SEN schools, alternative provision services, community groups and minority groups to explore opportunities for bespoke programmes for young people.
  • Liaise with training providers, employment services, employers, youth organisations, schools and colleges to recruit young people to participate in a variety of programmes.
  • Arrange and attend community events, school meetings, parent’s evenings and assemblies to promote programmes.
  • Manage the pre-programme relationship with participants and maintain their commitment to joining the programme.
  • Take responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of programme participants. Produce risk assessments as required and ensure safeguarding of young people.
  • Maintain accurate records/reports and ensure required paperwork is completed on time.
  • Develop knowledge of additional opportunities and support networks that may benefit the development and progression of participants.
  • Set and enforce appropriate disciplinary procedures in-line with Young Gloucestershire’s rules, regulations and codes of conduct.
  • Train supporting staff to help deliver the bespoke programmes.
  • Set programme objectives, to meet both group and individual needs and achieve expected learning outcomes.
  • Report against KPI’s and project outcomes for both YG and external funders.
  • Maintain accurate records/reports and ensure required paperwork is completed on time.
  • Develop knowledge of additional opportunities and support networks that may benefit the development and progression of participants.

  • Lead on other areas of youth work for Young Gloucestershire as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records using YG’s data management systems.
  • Keep up to date with current affairs and maintain an awareness of resources that may be of benefit to Young Gloucestershire.
  • Ensure servicing and maintenance of equipment as appropriate to your role.
  • Maintain a team work approach to all aspects of work.
  • Complete essential training.
  • Uphold Young Gloucestershire’s ethos and policies.
  • Promote a positive image of Young Gloucestershire.
  • Work as part of the wider organisation and undertake duties as required to ensure the strategic objectives of the organisation are achieved.

Able to provide leadership in a challenging environment

Experience of working with groups of young people including those with special educational needs and underrepresented groups.

Experience of delivering sessions in schools and community settings

Experience of motivating and inspiring young people to achieve their potential

Experience of project management or running projects for young people

Demonstrable commitment to recognising and valuing young people’s achievement in a broad range of learning settings

An understanding of the issues facing young people

Enthusiasm, stamina and a willingness to work unsociable hours when necessary

Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage with people at all levels

Experience of coordinating and organising effective meetings and an ability to handle sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy

Experience of sourcing and building relationships with key partners and stakeholders from the charity, statutory and business sectors

Excellent organisational and administrative skills

Good written and verbal communication skills and the proven ability to write reports and deliver presentations to a variety of audiences

Effective time management, including the ability to prioritise and manage a varied workload

The ability to work on own initiative to an agreed action plan

Basic IT skills including experience of Microsoft Office programmes

Driving license

DESIRABLE

A relevant qualification in working with children and young people or the delivery of alternative education programmes

Appropriate teaching qualifications, or willingness to undertake these while in post

Experience of managing a budget

Knowledge of safeguarding practice and procedures

Experience of planning, organising and completing community based projects

Knowledge of the local community, voluntary organisations and agencies

Experience of managing health and safety including risk assessment

A minibus license or willingness to complete appropriate minibus driver training

First Aid experience

Experience of managing a budget and line managing individuals
