Gardener

Winchcombe

Sudeley Castle and Gardens are seeking a gardener to join the team of gardeners at this high profile garden in the Cotswolds.

Sudeley Castle is both a private home, and major visitor attraction in the Cotswolds attracting 90,000 visitors a year. The award winning 14 acre garden is set around the historic Sudeley Castle and is maintained to a very high standard. The garden consists of 11 enclosed and themed areas, 3 of which are private, and include a Rose garden, a White garden, herb gardens and extensive topiary. The team also maintains the gardens around several holiday cottages located on the edge of the estate.

The ideal candidate will have training and experience as a professional gardener and will assist the Head Gardener in the maintenance and development of the gardens, working alongside the existing gardeners and volunteers. The work will include the maintenance of formal hedges, roses, herbaceous plants and lawns. Contact with visitors to the castle and garden is an important part of the role. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of garden plants and cultivation techniques and will ideally be qualified to at least BTEC level 3 diploma standard in amenity/ornamental horticulture or similar, and hold certification for the application of pesticides. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate proficiency and competence in the safe operation of a range of pedestrian, ride-on and hand-held machinery. Above all, the successful candidate will be interested in historic estate gardens and have a real desire to be involved in the maintenance and development of the garden at Sudeley and be committed to improvements in standards of cultivation and presentation.

Ideally, applicants will possess a full, clean driving licence and have access to a motor vehicle as public transport to Sudeley Castle is limited.

Please apply by posting or emailing your CV together with a covering letter detailing how you meet our requirements to Stephen J Torode, Head Gardener, to the address in the contact details or by clicking on Apply now.

Salary: £20,000 p.a
