Pre-School Room Lead (Temporary Full time)


Berkhampstead Day Nursery is looking for an exceptional Nursery Practitioner to work as Room Lead with children in our Pre-School room.

Post Title: Room Lead

Reports to: Nursery Manger/Deputy Manger

Responsible for: Room Teams

The role:

The Room Lead is a senior childcare professional, with responsibility for the day to day running of their room. They oversee the team and lead practice in providing a warm, stimulating and secure environment for children. They are responsible for ensuring exceptional levels of care and lead their team in promoting children’s wellbeing, health and safety. They guide and motivate their team in implementing new ideas and use a range of strategies to continually improve practice, in order to provide an outstanding level of childcare.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

1. To work closely with the other room leads to ensure continuity of care across the whole nursery, ensuring smooth transitions for children moving up.
2. To lead their team in the creation of a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for children.
3. To ensure the smooth day to day running of their room, maintaining legal ratios and managing their team effectively.
4. To role model highly effective practice and to lead their team in delivering the wider vison for the Day Nursery.
5. To allocate key children fairly across the team.
6. To act as a mentor to new team members and/or students and informing the management team regarding progress of this system.
7. To understand and ensure their team work to the Day Nursery policies and procedures and to work within the framework of the Children Act, the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Guidance, and other current legislation relating to childcare
8. To be vigilant and protect children from harm or abuse, reporting any concerns immediately in accordance with the Day Nursery’s child protection and whistleblowing policies.
9. To ensure very high standards of health, safety and hygiene practices are maintained in accordance with the Health, Care and Hygiene Policy.
10. To lead practice in implementing stimulating, age appropriate activities and ensuring the room is creatively set up and well-resourced at all times.
11. To hold weekly planning meetings to ensure all team members contribute to the effective implementation of a stimulating, varied learning environment.
12. To manage the EYFS paperwork system in their room, ensuring planning, observations and assessments are completed to a high standard and all paperwork is kept up to date and checked regularly. 
13. To manage their team’s non-contact time, ensuring all key Persons receive non-contact time for paperwork where possible.
14. To manage their room resource budget.
15. To attend weekly Room Lead meetings and inform their team of any necessary information.
16. To work flexibly as part of the whole staff team, assisting and supporting colleagues wherever required, in order to ensure the smooth running of the nursery.
17.  To build and maintain positive relationships with parents and where ever possible, address any concerns/complaints or refer them to the Department Supervisor.
18. Where ever possible, manage and resolve any team conflict, within the restraints of your role or refer to management.
19.  To attend out of working hours activities, e.g. training, staff meetings, parents evenings, events, etc.
20. To organise and record monthly room meetings to ensure good team motivation, information sharing and planning.
21. To respect and maintain confidentiality in relation to children, families, staff and the nursery.
22. To initiate and conduct effective risk assessment where necessary.
23. To respect and value all colleagues, children and parents, encouraging a positive and diverse working environment.
