About The Music Works and why we need this role

The Music Works is a Gloucestershire charity that transforms young lives through music.We’re specialists in working with young people in challenging circumstances to help them reach their full potential in music, in learning and in life. We work with over 3,000 young people a year in schools and our four community rehearsal spaces in Cheltenham, Gloucester, Stroud, and the Forest of Dean. Here is an introduction to our work:

In April 2021 we will be opening a new inclusive music hub for young people in Gloucester. The Hub will be a pioneering centre for inclusive best practise in music. It aims to be youth led with a focus on young people in challenging circumstances. The Hub will have 2 recording studios, a broadcast room, practice room, sensory music space and learning pod. It will also have a small, flexible events space and a chill out area with kitchen.

This is a new and pivotal role.Its main purpose is to oversee the operation of the Hub in Gloucester and make it a success. Working closely with our Creative Director we expect you to develop the commercial offer of the studio, and recording and rehearsal opportunities for young local artists, musicians, and bands. This role will also include managing a team of sound engineers, equipment store and maintenance of the equipment inventory as well as linking up with our small studios around the county.This is an exciting role for a dynamic and ambitious person with a passion for the power of music to transform lives.
Key responsibilities
• Manage and run the GloucesterStudio Hub,recording and rehearsal sessions and adminstrative processes
• Manage the facilities manager and receptionist/administrator, ensuring the smooth running of the Hub operations
• Recruit, line manage and developa team of young sound engineers
• Work with the Creative Directors to ensure the Hub is busy, buzzy and in use all of the time
• Liaise with admin to put in place systems e.g. bookings that ensure the Hub is running efficiently and effectively
• Promote the studio Hub (with our marketing team) to potential new commercial clients, meeting financial targets agreed with the Creative Director
• Work with our marcomms team to develop and promote the Hub’s brand among both young people and commercial audiences
• Develop and enforce studio rules and processes and contributing to the development of policies, procedures andrisk assessments related to the use of any equipment within the inventory.
• Manage the maintenance of the studioHub equipment, carrying out regular inventory checks, undertaking repairs in-house whenever possible, or managing the process of sending equipment off site for repair as required (ensuring the published inventory is up-to-date at any given time and arranging supplementary hires as necessary)
• Manage the issue and return of studio equipment
• Install, operate, or troubleshoot studio equipment or software
• Deliver some studio sessions if engineers are not available
• Ensuresafeguarding protocols are being adhered to in the studio
• Maintain a black book of freelancer contacts including specialists across creative fields
• Maintain records of feedback & evaluation from young people through Upshot
• Be committed to putting young people at the heart of everything we do
• Promote and comply with all of our policies and practices
• Be responsible for identifying and undertaking training and personal development
• Undertake any other reasonable duties, commensurate with the level of the post so as to ensure the smooth running of the Studio Hub
Person specification
We will be offering training as part of the role and although we don’t require all candidates to meet all criteria, we are keen to meet ambitious leaders who are willing to learn and develop.
Essential Experience and Skills
• Considerable experience of working in a studio setting
• Technical ability to troubleshoot and/or repair studio equipment
• Technical experience of the use of professional audio equipment such as PA systems, mixing desks, DAWs, backline and musical instruments such as guitars, keyboards and drum kits
• Knowledge and experience of one or more professional creative software solutions, such as Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, Pro Tools, Adobe Creative Suite
• Excellent communication and client relation skills
• Sound engineering experience
• Team management skills
• Time management skills
• A great team player
• Ability and desire to self-organise and work flexibly
• An understanding of health & safety and risk awareness
• Ability to get around the county ie by car
• Knowledge and understanding of IT management and / or network administration
• Good understanding of the experience of young people from challenging backgrounds
• Experience of working with young people with a range of multiple and complex needs
• Good administrative and time management skills for project management
• Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the arts and their value to young people’s development
• First Aider, or willing to undertake first aid training
• Experience of managing and supervising staff
• Previous experience of managing a studio
• Previous experience of commercial development of a studio
• Brand development/marketing experience
• Qualification in music
• A passion for music and a belief in its transformational powers for young people


Details of the role:
This is a full-time role (37.5 hours per week), subject to normal probation period of 3 months.It is apermanent role subject to availability of funding (we have 3 years funding to start things off).
We will consider job shares, reduced hours and flexible working with the right candidate.
The salaryis £28,000 - £32,000 for 37.5 hours a week – dependent on experience. Some weekends and evening work will be expected.
The role will be based at our Gloucester studio in Gloucester (from April 21) but some travel to other venues across the county will also be expected.
