Job summary

We’re looking for a planning support assistant to join our Development Management service.

About us

Stroud District Council covers an area of 175 square miles and has an exceptionally diverse physical, historic and natural environment offering infinite variety and interest.  Over 50% of the district is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  It contains over 3000 listed building entries, 41 conservation areas, and internationally and nationally important wildlife sites.

Acting as Local Planning Authority, the council deals with around 2,600 planning applications per year and our Local Plan review which will help deliver over 12,800 new homes is entering its final stages.

We are a friendly dynamic team dealing with a variety of applications making our work interesting and varied.

Our statutory development management function is split into three teams: a major and environmental team, and two area planning teams.  The planning support team provide administration support to all three teams.

About the role

The Planning Support Assistant is fundamental to the development management process providing administration support throughout the entire process of all planning applications.  

As the first point of contact, you’ll be an ambassador for the development management service, responding to general customer queries by phone, email, and face-to-face.

About you

This role would suit someone with administration experience and who has an acute eye for detail.  Providing great customer service will be at the forefront of everything you do.  You should be a skilled communicator, both orally and in writing, with an ability to relay complicated and technical information so that it is easily understood.  Strong IT skills are essential.  You’ll have an inquisitive nature, researching and solving problems with initiative.  You’ll be able to work as part of a team and have the ability to prioritise your workload and work independently.

You need at least 5 GCSEs at grade 4 to 9 or above including English and Maths (or equivalent).

You should have experience of working in an office environment and Microsoft Office programs.  You’ll need to demonstrate experience of working in a customer facing role.
