Planning Technician

Job description

We’re looking for a planning technician to join our busy Development Management service.

About us

Stroud District Council covers an area of 175 square miles and has an exceptionally diverse physical, historic and natural environment offering infinite variety and interest.  It contains over 3000 listed building entries, 41 conservation areas, and internationally and nationally important wildlife sites and protected landscape (AONB).

Acting as Local Planning Authority, the council deals with around 2,600 planning applications per year and our Local Plan review which will help deliver over 12,800 new homes is entering its final stages.

Our development management function is split into three teams: a major and commercial team, and two area planning teams.  Although this post would be based in our majors team, the Planning Technicians act at a district-wide level.

About the role

The Planning Technician is fundamental to the development management process.  Our technicians validate all types of planning applications, ensuring applications are accurate, of a high standard, and meet the regulatory requirements.  As part of this process, our technicians ensure we meet our duty to consult on planning and other proposals with our communities and statutory bodies.

As Planning Technician, you’ll also carry a caseload of enquiries, such as whether or not planning permission is required, provide pre-application advice, and process applications to discharge conditions.

As the first point of contact, you’ll be an ambassador for the development management service, responding to general and technical customer queries by phone, email, and face-to-face.  You’ll also provide administrative and technical support to the major and commercial teams and assist the Planners with these larger planning applications.

About you

This role would suit someone at the start of their planning career.  You’ll need an acute eye for detail and be confident interpreting and applying legislation.  Providing great customer service will be at the forefront of everything you do.  You should be a skilled communicator, both orally and in writing, with an ability to relay complicated and technical information so that it is easily understood.  Strong IT skills are essential.  You’ll have an inquisitive nature, researching and solving problems with initiative.  You’ll be able to prioritise your workload and work independently.

You should have knowledge of the planning system, planning legislation, and national and local planning policy.

You need at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English and Maths (or equivalent).

You should have experience of working in an office environment and Microsoft Office programs.  You’ll need to demonstrate experience of working in a customer facing role.

Interview date: 8th March 2024

It is important that our staff reflect the diversity of our community, and we therefore welcome and encourage applications from people of all genders and sexual orientation, those from Black, Asian and other minority ethnic backgrounds, and people with disabilities.

Our organisation is committed to safeguarding the welfare of vulnerable adults, young people and children.  Safer recruitment practices are applied to all job vacancies
