Statistical Analyst - College HE Project

Cheltenham or Remote/Home working

Department:  Data & Innovation - Policy & Research

Experience:  Experience of analysing quantitative data

HESA exists to enhance the competitive strength of UK higher education by collecting, analysing, and disseminating data about the UK HE sector. We provide a trusted source of information, supporting better decision making, and promoting public trust, to support this strategy.

Our strategy is delivered through our people. Ensuring that our staff have the skills, capabilities, and tools to do their jobs effectively is therefore a key theme underpinning all our activities and objectives. This includes providing opportunities for development, growth, and learning.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Statistical Analyst to join a new team working on HESA’s new ‘College HE’ project. Further information about the role is listed below, in addition, please find full role on our website.

The high-level vision for this project is to create a single consistent, comparable, detailed source of information about all students enrolled on higher education (HE) courses in further education (FE) colleges, in the UK. Each devolved administration in the UK collects its own college HE dataset using different data definitions and standards. Having multiple different administrative datasets, which are quite different from each other, makes it difficult for users to assemble and produce information about the whole UK HE student population. We want to address this by publishing a single and complete source of data based on all administrative data collections, regularly. This role will play a key part in addressing this gap in the data, and improving our understanding of the HE sector.

As part of this role, you will get involved in:

  • Undertaking analysis of HESA data for research and statistical output products
  • Extracting, manipulating and quality-assuring appropriate and often complex data from HESA databases using advanced database query languages or data manipulation tools
  • Undertaking statistical analysis resulting in written and/or verbal reporting
  • Supporting the production of official statistics outputs and contributing ideas for the development of statistical measures
  • Assisting with developing new processes at part of the work on Reproducible Analytical Pipelines (RAP).

You will be educated to Bachelors degree level in a subject containing a good proportion of data/statistical content, or have equivalent work experience and knowledge. including experience of analysing quantitative data for both oral and written presentations, have an interest in higher education and have experience of statistical analysis software applications and have experience of applying basic statistical techniques.

Experience with Oracle and/or SQL, experience of R, Python or Stata or other similar manipulation software and existing knowledge of Open Data principles and processes is highly desirable, as is experience of visualisation software such as Tableau or Power BI. Experience of JavaScript, HTML, CSS for maintenance of online assets and some knowledge of more advanced statistical techniques such as statistical modelling or time-series analysis, and an awareness of some of the main data sources covering HE, and some of the major data sources available for understanding society and the economy in the UK.

The salary range for this post is £25,000k - £28,500k depending on qualifications and experience. We offer an attractive package with 25 days leave, increasing to 30 days, plus bank holidays and extra Agency shutdown at Christmas; flexible working including UK based remote and home working options; pension scheme and occupational health support.

Application forms should be completed via our recruitment portal; it is planned that any suitable candidates will be interviewed at the earliest possible opportunity.
