Volunteer Youth Mentor

About the opportunity
Mentors provide committed, non-judgemental listening and support to young people aged between 11 and 25.

The aim of mentoring is to help participants identify and achieve their own goals to progress towards a healthier or more stable lifestyle. From school work to family friction and mental health issues.

Mentors meet with their mentees for around 1 hour a week whether just to chat, have a coffee or take part in a planned activity such as a walk or football

During this time volunteers should aim to develop positive, supportive relationships with their mentee, to be a source of encouragement in order to help develop their self-esteem and confidence.

Founded in 1991 by a local group of Christians, The Door has been at the heart of the Stroud district for over 25 years.

Our mission is to bring hope into the lives of young people and their families by unlocking potential and opening opportunity so that their past does not define their future. Creating a society where every young person’s future is determined by their potential not their past.

We do this through providing safe spaces to young people ages 8-25 and their families with youth clubs, mentoring, group support and much more.

The Door team is made up of 25 staff (mostly part time) and over 50 dedicated volunteers who's work was recognised in 2017 with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service (MBE eqv)

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control. There is no law against these things!

What are they looking for?
We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic volunteers who are ready to listen.

Volunteers should be be ready and willing to pass on his/her own skills and experiences to participants and so help them to discover opportunities for themselves.

To be a positive and active role model.

To take part in supervision and training, including attending group development sessions.

To adhere to the policies and practices of the scheme, laid out in the Handbook. In particular, to safeguard the welfare of young people and their families and prevent abuse.

To keep records as required.

Practical Considerations
Mentoring itself should take no more than about an hour a week plus perhaps a check in on the phone to The Door's team leader. We also encourage volunteers to take part in monthly Group Development sessions which happen once a month

Full training will be given and consists of 4 weekday evenings 7:30-9:30pm and 2 Saturday morning sessions 9am - 1pm

If you are unable to make all sessions a catch up will be provided.

Also applicants should be aware that the average mentoring relationship lasts around 3 months and you should be available to commit to volunteering for that time.
