Description
Are you passionate about driving service improvement, strengthening public confidence and ensuring the highest standards of professional accountability?
Gloucestershire Constabulary's Professional Standards Department (PSD) is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to undertake a newly created role of Police Staff Delegated Appropriate Authority.
This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in the oversight and resolution of complaints, helping to ensure that concerns raised by the public are handled fairly, proportionately and in accordance with statutory requirements.
As a key decision-maker within PSD, you will be responsible for overseeing a wide range of complaint cases, making significant decisions on behalf of the Appropriate Authority. You will provide independent scrutiny, identify opportunities for learning and service improvement, and contribute to the continuous development of professional standards across the Constabulary. You will also manage a small team of complaint handlers.
The role requires the ability to confidently assess complex information, exercise sound judgement and make cogent decisions in potentially sensitive and high-profile circumstances. You will engage with members of the public, officers, staff and external stakeholders, providing clear, professional and empathetic explanations of decisions, both verbally and in writing.
We are looking for an individual with:
Significant experience within policing or a related regulatory environment.
Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to evaluate complex evidence and apply legislation, policy and guidance appropriately.
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain difficult decisions with clarity, professionalism and sensitivity.
The confidence to work independently, manage competing priorities and maintain high standards in a demanding environment.
A commitment to organisational learning, continuous improvement and delivering an outstanding service to the public.
This is a challenging yet highly rewarding role that offers the opportunity to influence organisational culture, enhance public confidence and support Gloucestershire Constabulary's commitment to transparency, integrity and accountability.
The post is based at Police Headquarters, Gloucester, working 37 hours per week on a full-time, 12-month temporary basis.
The successful candidate for this role will be vetted at level Staff MV. This means the individual will need at least 5 years worth of residency in the UK.
Notice for internal candidates: this role is advertised as a fixed-term contract. In the event that you successfully interview for this role, you will accept the role on either a secondment or fixed-term contract basis.
You will only be offered a secondment subject to your current Line Manager’s approval - please note that there is no guarantee that management will agree to the secondment and there is no obligation for them to do so. It is advisable to liaise with management to see if a secondment would be supported before submitting an application.
In the event that you are offered the role as a fixed-term contract, you should be aware that you have no right to return to your previous role and will leave the force when your contract ends. In the event that you have accrued two years’ continuous service when your contract ends, you may be eligible to be added to the redeployment register, however it is not guaranteed that we will be able to offer you a suitable alternative. When accepting the role on a fixed-term basis, you take the personal risk that your employment with the force may end at the end of the contract. More information regarding the redeployment register can be found here.
