Family Action & the Role’s Impact

At Family Action, we support people through change, challenge, or crisis. It’s what we’ve done for over 150 years. We protect children, support young people and adults, and offer direct, practical help to families and communities.

We see first-hand the power of family to shape lives, for better or worse.

That’s why we:

  • Speak up for the importance of family in national and local policymaking,
  • Amplify family voices, and
  • Represent the changing needs of families in the UK today.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide practical and emotional support to children and families through 1:1 sessions, home visits, structured sessions, group work, and community-based programs.
  • Promote family resilience using restorative approaches, building on strengths, and empowering families to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Support the day-to-day delivery of the Children & Family Centre (C&FC) services, from community and stakeholder engagement to delivering universal provision (e.g. the community café) and maintaining a presence in our C&F Centres (open 8:30am–6:00pm).

Main Responsibilities

1. Supporting Children and Families

  • Deliver individual and group support across family centres, homes, and community venues.
  • Carry out child-focused assessments with families and professionals to identify needs, risks, and lived experiences.

  • Promote inclusion and equal access to services, especially for those most in need.
  • Create and develop resources to support families and children.
  • Help design and deliver universal, open-access services (e.g., Stay & Play, Drop-ins, community café).
  • Support implementation and staffing of universal provision and wider operational needs, including outreach events.

2. Multi-Agency Working

  • Participate in multi-agency meetings and collaborative planning, occasionally as the lead practitioner.
  • Make referrals for additional support where needed and contribute to multi-agency efforts.
  • Build knowledge of local services and assist families in accessing appropriate support.

3. Administration & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate, timely records aligned with Family Action’s standards and safeguarding procedures.
  • Support digital and telephone-based service delivery, including troubleshooting.
  • Assist with planning, monitoring, reviewing service development, and producing monthly summaries.

4. Safeguarding & Professional Standards

  • Prioritise the safety and wellbeing of children, raising safeguarding concerns and making referrals as required.
  • Adhere to all safeguarding policies and procedures.
