Job summary
The Matron is the most senior leader in midwifery within their clinical areas of responsibility, always upholding high quality midwifery care. They are accountable for midwifery practice within their clinical areas and ensure that midwifery issues are escalated to the Head of Midwifery, Director of Midwifery, Divisional General Manager, Speciality Director as appropriate. The Matron acts as clinical expert for their clinical areas of responsibility, providing leadership, development and performance management of the senior midwives to meet the service objectives and strategic vision. The Matron will have defined clinical areas of responsibility to complement their skill set, experience and professional interest, working collaboratively within the team of Maternity Matrons. Clinical areas include
- Antenatal services and triage
- Delivery Suite
- Antenatal and postnatal in-patient
- Community
- Birth Centres
Main duties of the job
The Matron provides forward-thinking clinical and professional leadership to nursing/midwifery staff at all levels within the Specialty, ensuring that midwifery care is delivered to a high standard and that the midwifery resource is managed effectively. The post holder will ensure that all patients are treated with compassion, dignity and respect placing value on equity, diversity and inclusion principles. They contribute to the ongoing implementation of the Maternity Strategy, ensuring achievement of its objectives and proactively developing nursing and midwifery roles. They will also undertake the key functions of the Matron role, ensuring that experience throughout the service is always of the highest standard inspiring patient, staff and public confidence. The post holder will be supported to work clinically for 20% of their time to role model professional behaviours, maximise relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and maintain clinical currency.
