Following the retirement of the current postholder, Harewood Infant School is seeking to appoint a committed, hardworking and skilled caretaker to join our friendly staff team.

Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate practical skill alongside an ability to self-motivate and prioritise. We need a caretaker with a real desire to ensure that our school remains a clean, safe and attractive environment for our children.

We are particularly keen to hear from people who have a range of trade skills (plumbers, electricians, carpenters, for example) although specific interest or expertise in one of these areas is also of interest to us.

The successful candidate will have key holding and security responsibilities as well as undertaking minor repairs of the school premises. Other areas of responsibility include a weekly health and safety check of the site and the weekly testing of the water system, emergency lighting and fire alarm.

The contract will be for 37 hours each week and there can be some flexibility about when these hours are worked; this can be discussed prior to application or at interview.

The holiday entitlement is 24.5 days a year rising to 29.5 days after 5 years of continuous service.
The successful candidate will be required to start by 1st September 2026 although an earlier start may be possible.

We are very happy to show applicants around the site or to discuss the role further over the telephone.

The Role
-Ensuring the school buildings and grounds are safe, secure, and maintained to a high standard
- Carrying out routine maintenance, basic repairs and DIY tasks.
- Managing site security, including opening and locking up the school.
- Monitoring heating, lighting, and energy usage.

-Ability to work independently and to manage time effectively.
-A positive, flexible attitude and commitment to the school community.
-A good sense of humour is essential!

We Offer:
-A friendly and supportive team environment.
-Training and development opportunities.
-Local Government Pension Scheme.

Application deadline: Friday 26th June 2026
Interview date: TBA

Please refer to the school's safeguarding policy which can be found on the school website. It is a condition of employment that the employee should not have been convicted of a criminal offence against children, nor have been dismissed, or resigned from, a previous employer for misconduct of a similar nature. Having a criminal record is not necessarily a bar to employment; it would depend on the nature, circumstances and background to the offence.

As part of our due diligence within safer recruitment, school will be carrying out online searches to help identify any incidents or issues which may need to be explored at interview. These searches will include, but will not be limited to the main social networking sites, including Instagram and Facebook.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. It expects all staff and volunteers to share the same commitment. This position is subject to an enhanced DBS check.
