Student Visas – Do I qualify for funding?
Unfortunately, if you are on a student visa you will not qualify for funding for this course as it is designed to progress candidates who are claiming benefits into work.
I work as a Lunch Time Supervisor – Can I catch up missed hours outside of the live classroom?
This intense course is conducted via a “Live Classroom” so the college will not accommodate missed time:
Many previous applicants however have approached their school for time off.
As there is a national shortage of TA applicants, many schools have been willing to allow time off to
complete the course.
I have child/work commitments that clash with the times of the live classroom. What can
be done?
This intense course is conducted via a “Live Classroom” so the college will not accommodate missed
time:
Even 1 hour missed from a day is a considerable amount of missed learning from a 4 1⁄2 hour class day; therefore, you would need to make alternative arrangements for your commitments or, alternatively request a different, more convenient course start date.
I am a pensioner – Do I qualify for funding?
You may qualify for funding, as a pensioner, only if you are in receipt of pension credits.
My work hours clash with the course hours – Can I do extra work in the evening?
This is not possible as the course is conducted via a “Live Classroom” not distance learning.
How long does it take to receive the TA certificate when I have completed the course?
The course is made up of 4 weeks “Live Classroom” plus 2 weeks “mop up” to allow candidates to
complete any outstanding course work. Following this it may take up to 6 weeks to receive your
certificate.
Can I get work as a TA before I receive my certificate?
On completion of the live classroom, you will be able to request a letter on college headed paper from the course tutor:
This letter will congratulate you on passing the course and will also outline the process that the college need to undertake to provide you with your certificate.
Some employers may accept this while you are waiting for your award (not guaranteed)
You WILL need your completed “enhanced DBS Check certificate” before you can start employment as a TA
What is a DBS Check?
DBS stands for the Disclosure and Barring Service, which is a governmental body that's sponsored by the Home Office. It provides this service to allow recruiters and employers to make safer hiring decisions. You may also have heard of the Criminal Records Bureau, which is the old name for the DBS.
A DBS check, of which there are different types, is documentary evidence of your criminal
history in the form of a certificate. According to the government's own DBS guidance, there are
four different types of DBS checks:
A basic check. A standard check. An enhanced check. An enhanced check + barred lists
For more information:
How long does the enhanced DBS take?
There is no set time frame or deadline for issuing a DBS check, but generally, they can take between two and ten days for a basic check and up to 4 weeks for an enhanced check.
Longer delays may be experienced if you don’t use the online service and/or if there are errors or
omissions in the application process. The most common reason for delay is called a stage 4 delay and is down to the resources of the local police departments.
Do I have to get a job with the course employer sponsor, or can I source my own position?
No, the course employee sponsors are there to help you, offer guidance and make the transition into work as smooth as possible for you: You are free to pursue any employers of your own choice for your TA position.
We would however recommend that you complete the registration process with the employer sponsor
when they contact you after the course as Cidori will pay for the cost of your enhanced DBS check which is completed by the sponsor as part of the registration process.
Are there any progression opportunities after I qualify?
Absolutely, after completing this course, you could:
- Secure a permanent position as a Teaching Assistant in a school, college or other provider.
- Progress to a Level 3 Diploma for Teaching Assistants.
- Obtain an Advanced Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools contract with a school or other educational provider.
What add-ons do I need to do for early years?

What add-ons do I need to do for Special Needs (SEND)?
