Part Time Freelance Drama Teaching Assistant Required
Churchdown and Twyning
North Gloucestershire
Term Time Saturdays approximately 7-9 hours per week.
Hourly Rate TBC depending on experience.
I am looking for an enthusiastic, confident and reliable freelance teaching assistant, ideally with some prior experience, to become part of a thriving drama facility.
The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a busy environment, which has a real family feel to it, looking after children from the ages of 3, up to young people of 18 years old, in small, age relevant groups, across two locations.
An active interest in drama and theatre would be preferred.
The weekly sessions take place in Churchdown on term time Saturday mornings, and Twyning on term time Saturday afternoons, between the hours of 9am and 4pm. The candidate will be required to make their own way between venues, but some travel costs will be covered.
Acting Up’s drama sessions are inclusive, and we encourage children of all backgrounds and abilities.
My new TA will need to have experience working with Neurodiverse children and young people, as one of the main elements of the role will be working closely with these individuals, to enable me to focus more on the group; as a whole.
The person we select will be responsible to Emily Hastings, who is also the dedicated safeguarding lead.
The job will carry safeguarding responsibility, as whoever we take on will be in close contact with children and young people.
The successful candidate would know, without being told, when a child or young person is feeling anxious or needs some additional support. They must have a patient manner with children and young people. The person selected will also require an excellent understanding of neurodiversity, and the needs of neurodivergent children and young people, and possess the ability to be able to respond accordingly so that the children are able to access the session with the right amount of assistance and support.
Although the role is primarily term time Saturdays; some additional admin hours may be required when we are doing a show, or if there is training, extra sessions or additional administration requirements. These will be discussed on a weekly basis, and we will be flexible, enabling you to fit these around your own commitments. Good IT skills are also preferable.
The candidate will also receive full, up to date training to lead sessions, as this person will be my deputy; and may be required to cover, should I have other work commitments on a Saturday.
This will be an exciting and varied role with possible progression, and links to other industry opportunities. The position is potentially a permanent, ongoing role for the right person, with a probationary period of 12 weeks. ( Autumn Term 2024).
The selected candidate must:
- Hold a full clean UK driving license/ or be able to travel easily and independently between venues.
- Be available on term time Saturdays and be open to some additional hours when required.
- Have experience working with children and young people, particularly those with neurodiversity and additional needs.
- Be reliable and committed to the cause.
- Appear as fun and positive and have a good calm and patient manner with children.
- Have the ability to work as part of a friendly team; but equally must be able to work under their own initiative.
- Be able to cope well under pressure and think on their feet if a situation changes.
- Be open to training and development.
- Exhibit good leadership skills.
- Have an interest in theatre and drama, and the drive to progress in this field and learn new skills.
- The employed has an expectation to act according to Acting Up!’s Safeguarding policy and uphold safeguarding principles.
- The employed has an expectation to act according to Acting Up!’s Staff Behaviour policy and work according to these expectations.
- They will also be informed to contact Emily Hastings first and foremost regarding any safeguarding queries or concerns as keeping children safe, happy and comfortable in our setting is our number one priority.
Although not essential, the candidate will ideally also have:
- A valid enhanced DBS (Can provide if not).
- Full up to date safeguarding and first aid training. (Can provide if not.)
- A background/experience in theatre and drama.
- An interest/background in dance, singing/musical theatre.
- Experience raising your own invoices/Good IT/Administrative skills.
