This is an exciting time to join the Modern Languages faculty. We are a genuinely strong and vibrant department and one of the strongest within the school, with a collaborative ethos and a strong culture of shared planning and mutual support. Staff benefit from a collaborative approach to curriculum design and shared high-quality resources across all key stages, helping to ensure workload is manageable and staff feel well supported.
At Key Stage 3, all students study either French or Spanish in Year 7, with the majority choosing to take German as a second language from Year 8. We have developed an exciting knowledge-rich curriculum influenced by leading linguists such as Gianfranco Conti and Barry Smith, with a strong emphasis on phonics, fluency, cultural understanding and communicative confidence.
At Key Stage 4, we offer French, Spanish and German following the Edexcel specification, with healthy class sizes across all three languages. At Key Stage 5, we are proud to sustain successful A Level groups in all languages and follow the EDUQAS specification.
The faculty is also supported by three Foreign Language Assistants who work closely with our Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 students to develop speaking confidence and authentic communication skills.
Languages are highly valued within the school and there are many opportunities for students and staff to participate in enrichment activities including international visits, theatre and cinema trips, cultural events, food tasting activities and language clubs.
