Senior Nursery Practitioner

Reports to: Room Lead, and the Nursery Management Team
Responsible for: Room Teams in absence of Room Lead
The role:
To care for and nurture babies and young children, providing them with a safe, secure and
stimulating environment in which they can learn, develop and reach their full potential. As a
Senior Practitioner, you will step into a Room Lead role in the room lead’s absence. You will,
follow your Room Lead’s example to oversee the team, the day to day running of the room,
and lead practice, ensuring exceptional levels of care are upheld. You will lead the team in
promoting children’s wellbeing, health and safety.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
1. To continue to uphold all major accountabilities as per the Nursery Practitioner Job Description
2. In the absence of the room lead, to ensure the smooth day to day running of their room, maintaining legal ratios and managing their team effectively.
3. To role model highly effective practice and to lead their team in delivering the wider vison for the Day Nursery.
4. To understand and ensure their team work to the Day Nursery policies and procedures and to work within the framework of the Children Act, the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Guidance, and other current legislation relating to childcare
5. To be vigilant and protect children from harm or abuse, reporting any concerns immediately in accordance with the Day Nursery’s child protection and whistleblowing policies.
6. To ensure very high standards of health, safety and hygiene practices are maintained in accordance with the Health, Care and Hygiene Policy.
7. To lead practice in implementing stimulating, age appropriate activities and ensuring the room is creatively set up and well-resourced at all times.
8. To attend Room Lead meetings in the absence of the Room Lead and inform their team of any necessary information.
9. To work flexibly as part of the whole staff team, assisting and supporting colleagues wherever required, in order to ensure the smooth running of the nursery.
10. To build and maintain positive relationships with parents and where ever possible, address any concerns/complaints or refer them to the Department Supervisor.
11. Where ever possible, manage and resolve any team conflict, within the restraints of your role or refer to management.
12. To attend out of working hours activities, e.g. training, staff meetings, parents evenings, events, etc.
13. To respect and maintain confidentiality in relation to children, families, staff and the nursery.
14. To initiate and conduct effective risk assessment where necessary.
15. To respect and value all colleagues, children and parents, encouraging a positive and diverse working environment.
