Support and Recovery Worker

Support and Recovery Worker

Gloucester

Job summary

We are excited to be able to offer 2 new opportunities for support workers to join our expanding services.

These roles will support patients with mental health issues as they transition from Accident and Emergency Departments and inpatient hospital beds back to the community and into their homes.

Returning home and accessing services can often be an extremely challenging time and I believe that we have an opportunity to improve this experience for patients under our care.

If you have experience in support working and your own experience of recovery, then I would like to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

Working alongside Mental Health Liaison Practitioners, the post holder will be based within The Mental Health Liaison Service (Working Age Adults). The role will cover Gloucester Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals, working with individuals with mental health problems and other vulnerabilities that have come into contact with the Emergency Departments and Inpatient Wards.

The post holder will support clients to access and utilise a range of community services in order to improve their use of these resources, which is likely to improve their mental health, social difficulties, and reduce the risk of them re-offending. The post holder will actively engage and work with a small number of individuals who are likely to have a wide range of mental health problems, along with a level of co-existing complex needs, including homelessness, substance misuse problems, significant risk histories and social exclusion, and who at times may present with extremely challenging behaviours. The support and recovery workers will provide time limited 1:1 support to clients, enabling them to access a wide range of services that can provide help and advice with, for example, mental health, housing, social exclusion, substance misuse, education, employment and debt management difficulties. The post holder will be expected to develop good links with community resources in order to enable improved and supported access to services.

About us

We have a skilled and dedicated workforce of over 5000 colleagues working in a diverse range of services over 55 sites and within people's homes. We strive to enable a welcoming workplace culture that builds and celebrates civility, inclusivity and diversity, while providing a sense of belonging and trust.

Annual staff surveys, regular Pulse surveys and other engagement opportunities provide our people with lots of opportunity to tell us about their experiences of working with us. In the latest staff survey, 61% of colleagues gave us their views. It was great to hear that:

  • 72% of colleagues would recommend the Trust as a place to work, ranking us 1st for Provider Trusts in the South West region on this question.
  • 76% would recommend the standard of care provided in our services if a friend or relative needed treatment, also ranking us 1st in the South West region.
  • 81% said that care of patients and service users is the Trust's priority, compared with an average in comparable NHS Trusts in England of 64%.

This high-level overview shows we are in a healthy position, with higher scores than average for comparable organisations, alongside a great response rate, indicating good staff engagement. However, we also know we have plenty of room for improvement in many areas. To that end, we continue to prioritise and invest in our commitment to genuinely becoming a Great Place to Work with consistent top-quartile performance in the annual staff survey and Pulse surveys.
