Job summary

 

This is a replacement post for a 10 PA Endocrinologist within the department, following theretirement of Dr Alison Evans.The role focuses predominantly on endocrinology, complemented by one general Diabetesclinic per week. The successful candidate will lead the Joint Pituitary Service, conductingbimonthly clinics with the Southmead Hospital neurosurgical team. This involves managingcomplex cases in coordination with the BNOG Skull Base MDT and the QEH Birminghampituitary service. Additionally, the appointee will participate in the local NET MDT,collaborating with the Tri-Counties Oncology Service, UGI surgeons, and radiology, whileliaising with the Birmingham National Centre of Excellence as needed.As a large District General Hospital (DGH), GHNHSFT manages an endocrine caseload of significant volume and complexity. The service is supported by a robust MDT structure, including a monthly Biochemistry MDT and a quarterly Neuroradiology MDT featuring a visiting specialist from NBT. We are seeking a candidate to enhance our clinical pathways, specifically strengthening the link with ENT for the management of Head and Neck paraganglioma.

Main duties of the job

 

This substantive Consultant post is for the Trust's Diabetes & Endocrinology service. As asenior clinician, the post-holder will work collaboratively with medical, professional, andmanagerial colleagues to deliver high-quality healthcare across the Trust's patientpopulation. The role includes a commitment to the weekend acute medicine service(currently 1-in-12), conducting post-take ward rounds for unselected medical takes.Notably, there is no general medicine on-call commitment. GHNHSFT serves as a majorclinical hub, providing a full primary PCI service, an out-of-hours GI bleed rota, SDEC, andstroke thrombolysis. As the regional vascular hub, the Trust co-locates vascular surgeons withan inpatient bed base; the successful candidate will be expected to cover 10 specialtyinpatient beds on this shared ward at GRH on a 2-in-12 basis.In alignment with the NHS Long Term Plan, the appointee will work cross-site and atcommunity hospitals to provide care closer to home. Our endocrine service is one of thelargest users of Advice & Guidance (A&G) in the country according to the latest GIRFT data,and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute actively to this workload.A collaborative, team-oriented approach is vital. The post-holder must take ownership of thedepartment's general workload, providing essential cross-cover for A&G, ward rounds, andinpatient referrals during annual leave or colleagues' non-working days.
