General Practitioner for the Non-Specific Symptoms Diagnostic Service
Gloucester
Job summary
This is a rare and exciting opportunity for an experienced General Practitioner to support the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT) Non-Specific Symptoms (NSS) 2 Week Wait cancer exclusion service.
The post holder will be an integral part of this innovative team. Working closely with colleagues in primary, community, secondary care and the NSS team, the NSS Clinicians will focus on diagnosing cancer earlier and faster where a patient's symptoms are concerning, but do not fit a defined cancer pathway and thus may lead to a delay in cancer diagnosis.
From the point of referral, the NSS team will support the patient through their diagnostic journey with the aim to provide a streamlined service with positive patient experience. For patients diagnosed with cancer, this will mean they will receive rapid assessment, MDT discussion and ultimately an earlier diagnosis prior to transfer of care to a site-specific cancer team. The majority of patients will not have cancer, but may have other significant conditions, and will be referred to the appropriate service or back to GP care with signposting and a wellbeing plan to further support where necessary.
Main duties of the job
2WW NSS GPs will work alongside Patient Navigators and administrative support to triage, assess, support and signpost patient referrals to the appropriate diagnostic tests and where possible, deliver a diagnosis. The diagnostic process will be supported by access to secondary care clinicians for advice via the Advice and Guidance service. A weekly case review meeting will inform decisions regarding the patient's diagnostic pathway, management and discharge decisions. Patients will be referred onto the appropriate speciality if a cancer diagnosis is made, to a non-cancer service if an urgent referral is required or discharged back to their GP. Signposting to healthy lifestyle and wellbeing advice will be offered where cancer has been excluded.
