Job Overview

An exciting opportunity is again being offered for enthusiastic and motivated senior trainees (ST4 or above) with an interest in leadership, management and quality improvement to join Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS FT. Continuing our successful Chief Registrar Scheme we are looking to appoint Chief Registrar in Surgery for (August to August) 2026/27.

The post will consist of 50% full time equivalent protected time for Chief Registrar work - including quality improvement projects, teaching, leadership and service improvement. The remaining time will be allocated to clinical surgical work within theDivision.

Within the organisation and gain a unique insight into NHS leadership and management processes, as well as deeper knowledge of NHS structures and stakeholders.

The Chief Registrar will be expected to attend modules delivered as part of the RCP's bespoke development programme, which will cover, for example, change management, team culture and development, quality improvement, leadership, influencing and personal resilience.

This is a fixed-term role for minimum of 12 months. The role can be undertaken in programme or out of programme (training, experience or pause).

Main duties of the job

The chief registrar will ideally report to and be mentored by the medical director, a nominated deputy, or other senior clinical leader. The mentor role requires a minimum time commitment of monthly 1-hour meetings with the chief registrar, and this commitment should be taken into account when nominating a suitable mentor.

The chief registrar will also have a named educational supervisor for their clinical role, who may or may not be the same as their clinical supervisor.

There will be formal educational oversight of the role, with an induction, educational agreement, personal development plan and regular appraisals.

About us

Gloucestershire Royal Hospital provides general hospital services predominantly to people living in the west of the county. Some services such as renal and haemodialysis inpatient paediatrics, paediatric oncology inpatient neurology rheumatology dermatology and ENT are provided for the whole county.

Cheltenham General Hospital provides general hospital services predominantly to people living in the east of the county and parts of south Worcestershire. Some services, such as ophthalmology are provided for the whole county. The Oncology Centre at Cheltenham General Hospital is the hub of the three Counties Cancer Network being a centre of excellence for Gloucestershire, Herefordshire Worcestershire and part of Wales.

Both Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals have Emergency Departments with heli-pad access at GRH.
