Cheltenham
Would you like to use your skills and experience to support the legacy of one of Cheltenham’s most famous inhabitants?
If so, we have exciting times ahead as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Holst Birthplace Museum, now the Holst Victorian House. This is an opportunity to work in a vibrant cultural setting, preserving history while driving long term success. We are looking to recruit a part time Operations Manager to oversee daily operations and ensure the seamless functioning of our unique historic venue.
The Holst Victorian House is the birthplace of one of England’s greatest composers, Gustav Holst. It is a house ‘captured in time’ with authentic period lighting, furnishing, artwork and decorations, illustrating what life was like in a middle class Victorian home at the time of Holst’s birth in 1874, and is home to a number of manuscripts and important items such as the piano on which Holst composed his famous Planets suite.
Our mission is “To share the stories of the Holst Victorian House, a period home where composer Gustav Holst was born”. This mission supports our Charitable Objects, which are the advancement of the education of the public by: The maintenance, promotion and continuing development of a museum and period house dedicated to Gustav Holst; and Encouraging the art of music.
The Operations Manager will have some experience in leading and working in a team, preferably with a Museum or arts-related background. The key elements of the role are:
- Managing the front of house volunteers and rota to ensure the Museum is open on time as published and that all our visitors receive a 1st class experience. This includes occasional evening and weekend group tours and events. Ensure the Museum is closed securely
- Administer the day to day business and financial activities in line with Museum procedures
- Manage the shop, ordering supplies and optimising revenue and profit
- Organise and manage group and school bookings and visits, and assist event organisers with the practical aspects of in-Museum and external and community events, sometimes out of normal hours
- Provide guided tours
- Monitor and respond to bookings, visitor feedback and enquiries@holstvictorianhouse.org.uk
You will receive induction, familiarisation and training for the role and develop new skills and experiences in a strong team of Trustees, staff and volunteers. The role also offers the opportunity to improve the health and wellbeing of people and communities and to contribute to preserving Gustav Holst’s legacy and our Victorian home.
Hours are 9:30 to 5:00, with a half hour lunch, 4 days a week, including Saturdays by arrangement, although we do expect some flexibility to meet the needs of the visitors and the Museum.
