We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a well-qualified and enthusiastic Teacher of English to join our thriving and successful department. Applications are welcomed from both experienced teachers and Early Career Teachers (ECTs). This is a full-time, permanent position commencing in January 2027.

At Pittville School, we are proud that our 2025 Ofsted inspection recognised the strengths of our school community and confirmed that we continue to be a Good school. Inspectors praised our inclusive culture, commenting that “Pupils achieve highly, as reflected in published outcomes” and that “Pupils are happy and feel safe in school. They behave well in lessons and around the school site.” We place great value on staff wellbeing, professional development and collaboration, creating a supportive environment where both colleagues and students flourish.

The successful candidate will join a dedicated and experienced team of English teachers alongside our school librarian. We are looking for a teacher who is passionate about their subject, committed to high standards, and able to inspire students through engaging and effective classroom practice. The ability to work collaboratively within a team that values academic excellence, personal growth and kindness is essential. Experience of teaching AQA GCSE English Language and English Literature would be advantageous but is not required.

Our commitment to high expectations is reflected in an ambitious and carefully sequenced curriculum. At Key Stage 3, longer schemes of learning allow students to develop deep subject knowledge and master essential skills. Students study a rich range of texts, including The Odyssey, Much Ado About Nothing, Oliver Twist and Nineteen Eighty-Four, providing excellent preparation for GCSE study. Across Key Stages 3 and 4, we are committed to ensuring that all students develop the confidence, resilience and analytical skills needed to succeed with challenging texts.

The successful candidate will join Pittville School at an exciting stage in our ongoing drive to improve reading across the school. Alongside targeted interventions, initiatives such as tutor-time reading and fortnightly library lessons help foster a lifelong love of reading. More recently, we have introduced ‘Faster Read’ units, where entire texts, including Catherine Johnson's Freedom and Susan Hill's The Woman in Black, are read over a concentrated three-week period. These units support reading fluency, comprehension and vocabulary development while promoting enjoyment of literature.

Pittville School is an 11-16 comprehensive school located in the heart of Cheltenham. We are particularly proud of the positive attitudes, excellent behaviour and strong relationships that visitors consistently observe. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a welcoming and ambitious school community.

We are committed to supporting your professional growth throughout your career. All new staff benefit from a comprehensive induction programme, complemented by a high-quality programme of whole-school professional development. As part of a Teaching School Partnership, we also offer access to a wide range of leadership and professional learning opportunities, alongside external courses, school visits and local networks.

Closing date for applications: 9am Tuesday 20th October

Interviews date: 22nd October

Applications will be reviewed upon receipt, and interviews will be arranged accordingly.

The successful applicant will be subject to child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with previous employers, social media screening and an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
