5 days per week (Mon-Fri) 37 hours per week (term time only).
Point 7-10 £22,583-£23,687 Actual salary - (FTE £26,403 - £27,694).
We are looking to appoint a Science Technician to work in our outstanding science department. The successful candidate will have good organisational skills and a good understanding of science practical work and related Health and Safety requirements. Previous experience of preparing practical resources would be an advantage but not necessary. Ofsted assessed Balcarras in 2005, 2009, 2014 and 2025 as “Outstanding” in every category.

JOB TITLE: Science Technician
RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of Science / Head Science Technician
GRADE: Point 7-10 £22,583-£23,687 Actual salary - (FTE £26,403 - £27,694).

Task: Co-ordinate use of science resources and facilities.
Description: Co-ordinate use of science resources and facilities. Preparation of practical resources. Maintaining photocopied resources.
Task: To ensure the maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment.
Description: Actively contributing to the assessment, monitoring and review of both health and safety procedures and information resources. Keeping up to date with health and safety requirements and with developments in practical science. Safe disposal of waste materials and hazardous substances eg sharps, dissection material. Responding to chemical hazards such as spills. Organising, storing and checking the condition of chemicals and equipment.
Task: To contribute to the design, development, setting up and maintenance of resources and events.
Description: Constructing and modifying specialised apparatus. Setting up and caring for plant and animal collections. Assisting with Open Evening, Taster Day, Induction Day, Year1/2 practical sessions, STEM week, CSI days and extra-curricular science dept events.
Task: Routine and non-routine cleaning, maintenance, calibration, testing and repairing of equipment.
Description: Checking equipment for damage. Cleaning and repairing equipment. Maintaining power packs, balances,microscopes, multimeters etc
Task: Ensuring chemicals in reagent and stock bottles are full.
Description: Filling up reagent bottles and jars. Making stock solutions.
Task: Maintaining laboratories and lab resources.
Description: General laboratory cleaning. Cleaning and mending lab equipment such as glassware, Bunsens, gas taps.
Task: Maintaining stock levels.
Description: Checking stock and letting head technician know when stock is low.
