Support Worker
Stroud
Responsible to: Service Manager
Salary: £11.50 per hour
Benefits: 5% employer’s contribution to a stakeholder pension
Leave: Pro rata 31 days per year, inclusive of statutory bank holidays
Hours: Full time 37.5 hours per week
Job Purpose
- As a Support Worker your role will be to enable an individual to make positive changes to their life.
- To offer sensitive, professional, supportive and purposeful activity including housing support, enabling individuals to maintain their tenancies and to live as independently as possible.
- To provide person centred, enablement focused support to individuals within Supported Housing, clarifying both the purpose and intended outcomes.
- To provide aims and outcomes that are specific and targeted, expand opportunities and are supportive.
- To build a mentoring relationship and trust with residents.
- Communicate and review progress with individuals.
- Through time limited focussed individual work and transition planning assist the resident to progress with postiive move on.
Specific Duties
To be implemented with support from the Service Manager who has overall responsibility for the direction of the project.
- To provide comprehensive support to residents with complex needs, which may well include for example: substance misuse, anger management Issues, mental health, learning difficulties, attachment disorders, inappropriate behaviour and eating disorders.
- Advise and support on matters such as claiming benefits, budgeting, cooking, self care including signposting to relevant agencies where appropriate for counselling, education, employment, training and volunteering.
- To engage with and develop understanding of residents’ specific difficulties and approaches for encouraging their progression towards greater independence, lifeskills and the ability to live within a social framework as appropriate.
- To assist in the development of individual person centrered support plans and supporting people who use our services in achieving their goals.
- To provide support to residents including one to one individual support, accessing support groups and liasion with other agencies on behalf of people who use our services when required.
- Enable individuals to self manage their own personal & domestic budgets and resources.
- To enable residents to access community services and facilities & encourage their integration within the community. This may involve some weekend and evening work on occasion.
- To contribute to the protection of individuals from the risk of abuse and harm to self and others who use our services.
- To assess each resident for appropriate move-on accommodation, working with the most appropriate agencies to help the residents move on from the project.
- To support new residents taking up their accommodation by enabling them to: prepare the accommodation, arrange for replacing or renewing defective items of furniture and equipment assisted by the Service Manager.
- To enable residents to take responsibility for the maintenance and security of their housing by being able to report all repairs and maintenance matters, and ensuring that all resulting works are carried out satisfactorily.
- To enable and assist with any household task that the client may need support with, as identified in their support plan, (inclusive of support to clean and maintain their property).
- To liaise and maintain good relations with colleagues and external stakeholders.
- It is essential to have own car with business use insurance.
General
- To keep appropriate accurate records and to undertake other administrative duties as required including completion of all monitoring forms required by partner agencies, using electronic media as appropriate.
- To be responsible for ensuring that services continually improve in line with internal recommendations and plans as well as external requirements.
- To be a good communicator, both verbally and in writing.
- To monitor and report to senior staff the effectiveness of support.
- To work as a team member, sharing information and supporting colleagues across the organisation.
- To act in accordence with the OPENhouse Health & Safety requirements and to notify senior management promptly if there are any concerns.
- To participate in regular supervision and appraisal and undertake any relevant training appropriate to the role.
- To work in accordance with OPENhouse policies and procedures and those of external regulators.
- To adhere to the Professional Code of Conduct for all OPENhouse staff.
- To identify own support needs.
- To participate in training and development opportunities identified to meet the post holders’ individual training and professional development needs.
- To be able to use basic computer packages including e-mail, internet and the internal client records management system. .
- To carry out other duties consistent with the above as may be required by the Senior Management Team.
- To be responsible for promoting OPENhouse and the work we do.
Person Specification
Essential
- Commitment to the aims and values of OPENhouse and a desire to bring about positive change in supporting vulnerable young people and adults.
- Educated to NVQ level 2 or equivalent in experience in a similar field.
- Operational understanding of mental health conditions, addiction, and housing as it relates to the social care agenda.
- Experience of working with vulnerable people.
- Effective communication skills and relationship management abilities.
- Personal drive, energy, integrity, adaptability, and compassion.
- Understanding of the voluntary and community sector in the UK and the issues it faces.
- Commitment to the support and development of vulnerable individuals with complex needs and behaviours.
- Ability to undertake lone working.
- Ability to work under pressure and prioritise workload.
- Ability to de-escalate challenging behaviour.
