~Philip Cooke - Freelancer - Managing Director, The Destination Marketing Group~

Gloucester

Philip Cooke is a Gloucester-based freelance tourism and urban/rural regeneration marketing consultant who has spent most of the last forty years helping to drive forward Gloucestershire’s tourism economy and the regeneration some of its most important urban and rural centres.

Philip’s Gloucestershire story began when he joined Gloucester City Council’s Leisure Services Department in 1984, before progressing to become the city’s Head of Tourism, Marketing and City Centre Management between 1992 and 2000.

His work for the city included winning a £10.65m Sports Lottery Fund Award for the redevelopment of Gloucester Leisure Centre (now GL1), a c.£1m Arts Lottery Fund Award for the Guildhall Arts Centre project and, in 1992, being named as the UK’s ‘Public Sector Manager of the Year.’

Philip then left the public sector in early 2000 to launch his tourism, leisure and urban/rural regeneration marketing company, Destination Marketing (UK) Ltd, which now trades as the Destination Marketing Group (‘the DMG’ for brevity).

An experienced bid writer, Philip was responsible for securing a £10.65 Sports Lottery Fund award for the redevelopment of Gloucester Leisure Centre (now GL1), c. £500k for the development of Gloucester’s Guildhall Arts Centre and, most recently, a c.£200k ERDF grant for the planning and construction of the ‘Forest of Dean Greenway’ – a multi-purpose walking, cycling and horse-riding route that traverses the county.

Philip has an MBA in International Tourism Management and he is a member of both the Public Relations Consultants Association and the Chartered Institute of Journalists.
