Community Well-Being - Polytunnel Volunteer

Cheltenham

We need you if:

Behind our Head Office at 340 High Street based in Cheltenham, we have a brand new polytunnel where we will be growing fruit and vegetables to supplement the food we offer our clients in the ‘Pantry’ (our community food bank). Just as important, we want to engage people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to come along and get involved with the sowing, planting and harvesting of our crops. The benefits of gardening run much deeper than just exercise; research shows significant reductions in depression and anxiety and improved social functioning. We believe that working with others at the polytunnel will contribute to reducing isolation and loneliness, and boost confidence. And on top of that, we will all have fun and learn new skills.

We will ask of you to do the following:

This is a new venture at 340, and we are looking for a small number of volunteers to support our garden facilitator in running the project by working in the polytunnel/ outside beds and supporting the service users who will come to get involved. If you are an experienced gardener, there will be plenty of opportunities to help shape the project and share your skills and expertise with others. If you are a novice, come along to learn new skills and have some fun. We can’t do this without additional help, so if you share our vision and values, please get in touch with us about volunteering your time. Although we can be flexible, ideally you will be able to commit to being at the polytunnel on a regular basis so we can ensure the polytunnel is opened and crops watered every day. For example, this might mean you come in every Tuesday morning from 10.00 -12,00 am.

We commit to you:

We Place the Safety of our Clients, Staff, Students, and Volunteers first:

CCP uses Safer Recruitment practices to onboard volunteers. These entail an application form to be completed, Interview, Induction training and Enhanced DBS vetting and references.

What we hear from the Volunteers:

‘It was the best day ever when we got all the topsoil and compost into the polytunnel and made it ready for action. We had lots of laughs and working with the others made me feel part of a team and gave me a real sense of purpose’

We as a Charity

We as a Charity CCP was originally founded in 1989 by a local businessman in response to the growing number of homeless young people in Cheltenham. Recognising that people as young as 16 were sleeping rough around the town after having been thrown out of their family home, he purchased a building and opened a 10-bed hostel.

We have grown a lot since then and now aim to transform the lives of children, young people, families, and vulnerable adults by preventing homelessness, strengthening families and promoting independence. With a head office in Cheltenham, we currently employ 220 staff, backed up by a team of 160 volunteers, currently delivering services and projects in Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, South Gloucestershire, Bristol, Wiltshire, and Dorset.

Together WE can make a difference
