Part time Qualified Dispenser

Wotton-under-Edge, Berkeley and Frampton on Severn, Gloucestershire

Job Summary

To be responsible for the processing of prescriptions in accordance with practice policy and extant legislation. The post holder will assist in the preparation of all aspects of dispensing and assist with stock control, ordering and re-stocking of the dispensary.

In addition, the post-holder will be required to support the dispensary manager in ensuring a high-level of service is delivered at all times, whilst supporting the multi-disciplinary team in line with the strategic objectives of the practice.

The post holder will project a positive and friendly image to all patients and other visitors and deal with dispensing queries (in person and on the phone) in a professional, courteous and efficient way.
The post holder must be prepared to undertake any necessary training to ensure that they have the necessary skills and competence required.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Accepting prescription requests from patients, either in person or via the online requesting facility.
• Processing and dispensing prescriptions in accordance with the practice dispensing protocols.
• Checking with GP’s or in patient records if concerned about the appropriateness of requests for medication.
• Dealing with queries from patients regarding their prescriptions.
• Collecting all due prescription charges and ensure patients declaration on the reverse of FP10 is duly filled in and signed by the patient.
• Using dispensary computer systems to generate stock lists and labels.  Operation of efficient stock control appropriate to the needs of the dispensary with the objective of ensuring continuity of supply for patients and minimising wastage
• Regularly check out of stock items with relevant supplier and order alternative item if appropriate.
• Ordering drugs using the link to the drug wholesalers.
• Ensuring that drugs are received and stored in an appropriate manner in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions.
• Ensuring that refrigerated items are stored at the appropriate temperature and maintaining the fridge temperature control record/logbook.
• Cleaning work surfaces and shelving on a regular basis and ensuring that that all dispensary equipment is kept clean and kept in good working order.
• Maintaining full and accurate records of all dispensing transactions using the practice computer system.
• Answering the telephone and dealing with queries from patients, hospitals, nursing homes, chemists, suppliers etc
• Undertaking other reasonable duties within the framework of the post as directed by the Dispensing Manager. Ordering and unpacking drugs and dressings
• Handling controlled drugs (and keeping register). To keep accurate records in Controlled Drug Register.
• Handling prescription money (cash and card payments) and operating the till.
• Assisting when required to meet targets in relation to dispensing doctors scheme (DSQS).
• Assisting in annual and other ad hoc stock checks.
• Provide cover for annual leave/sickness.

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the dispenser may be requested to:

a. Partake in audit as directed by the audit lead
b. Provide guidance for trainee dispensary staff and students as necessary
c. Remain current with the latest guidance ensuring the dispensary conforms to NICE, CQC etc guidance.

Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.

Health & Safety

The post-holder will comply with all aspects of their own and others’ health and safety and infection control as defined in the practice Health & Safety policy, the practice Health & Safety manual, and the practice Infection Control policy and published procedures. This will include (but will not be limited to):

• Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
• Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory / contractual / professional requirements, and good practice guidelines
• Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens process, including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transport arrangements
• Management and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the practice, including provision, ordering, availability and ongoing correct usage by staff
• Hand hygiene
• Safe management of sharps procedures including training, use, storage and disposal
• Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy, clean and sterile, and safe way, free from hazards. Initiation of remedial / corrective action where needed or escalation to responsible management
• Actively identifying, reporting, and correction of health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised
• Undertaking periodic infection control training
• Waste management including collection, handling, segregation, container management, storage and collection
• Spillage control procedures
• Demonstrate due regard for adult and child safeguarding

The post-holder will:

• Discuss with other members of the team how the policies, standards and guidelines will affect own work
• Participate in audit where appropriate
