Full-time SEN Teacher (to teach across all school years but EYFS training/experience would be advantageous)

Reports to: Vice Principal

St Rose's is a non-maintained special school for pupils with severe, complex, profound, and multiple learning difficulties. We have provision from 2 to 25 years; with our post-19 students attending St Martin’s, our on-site college.

The successful applicants will have a real passion for teaching children or young people with special educational needs. You will also have the ability to meet the needs of students with a range of abilities, motivate them and have high expectations of what they will achieve. You will enable all of our students to enjoy their learning and make outstanding progress and will be able to deliver lessons which are consistently good/outstanding. You will be a good communicator with excellent interpersonal skills. You will also be a highly motivated, enthusiastic, energetic person with a desire to become involved in all aspects of school or college life and be able to work as part of a team.

Job Purpose:

Teaching and learning:

  1. Provide a quality of teaching and learning provision that can be judged to be good/outstanding and ensures all students make good/outstanding progress.
  2. Carry out teaching duties in accordance with the school/college curriculum long term plans and the Teaching, Learning and Assessment Policy.
  3. Supervise and guide the work of support staff, including Teaching Assistants and Dual Role staff who are assigned to their classes, to collaborate to meet the needs of the students.
  4. Participate in short, medium and long term planning, preparing materials and attending meetings as required.
  5. Set clear learning objectives and have high aspirations and set challenging targets for all students taking account of prior attainment, learning styles and specific needs.
  6. Promote and develop literacy and numeracy skills throughout teaching and learning activities so that they do not present barriers to learning.
  7. Review student targets regularly and be responsive to students who are not making expected progress and provide interventions to support them.
  8. Use data to plan lessons and learning materials to motivate and support all students.
  9. Set high expectations for the behaviour of students within the classroom by establishing a purposeful working atmosphere and providing challenging and inspirational learning experiences in line with school/college policies.
  10. Set work for students absent from school/college.
  11. Demonstrate good practice in the teaching areas of responsibility.
  12. Use IT and other technologies and learning resources as tools to inspire and motivate learners.
  13. Work collaboratively with therapists to benefit students.
  14. Ensure a stimulating learning environment is maintained in the classroom, including provision of a high quality of display.
  15. Ensure teaching areas, resources and equipment are maintained in good order, with regard to Health and Safety and security of property.

Assessing and reporting:

  1. Observe, assess, record and report on students’ achievements and contribute to the review process.
  2. Mark and assess students’ work providing feedback and next step targets when required.
  3. Keep high quality records to promote tracking and monitoring of student progress using data and teacher assessment records.
  4. Set and mark examinations, assessments and coursework when required.
  5. Provide annual reports and profiles on students as required and to monitor student progress.
  6. Develop effective working relationships and liaise with parents and attend progress events for parents/carers and individual meetings as required.
  7. Work within the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Code of practice.
  8. Participate as required in EHCP and annual review meetings with colleagues, other professionals and parents/carers and complete relevant documents linked to this.

Pastoral Responsibilities:

  1. To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people.
  2. To maintain high levels of safeguarding practice for all children and young adults in school/college, monitoring individual students and recording any incidents relating to safeguarding in line with legislation, school/college policies and procedures.
  3. Establish a rapport with students to develop their social, emotional, physical and intellectual potential and be a main source of reference for any issues arising relating to their wellbeing and development.
  4. Promote teamwork, sharing good practice and supporting colleagues.
  5. To participate in the pastoral organization of the school/college and be a point of contact for parents/carers.
  6. To record and promote good attendance in line with school/college policy.
  7. Support staff training to meet the needs of the students.

Standards and quality assurance:

  1. Support the vision, mission and values of St Rose’s and St Martin’s.
  2. Act as a role model to students and staff in respect of dress, attendance, punctuality and general conduct.
  3. Attend and participate in open afternoons, student performances and other events held in school/college.
  4. Ensure that any confidential data and record keeping requirements for the school/college are recorded accurately and in a timely manner.
  5. Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, adult safeguarding, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to the relevant person.
  6. Develop links with governors, LA’s, external professionals, neighbouring schools/colleges, community groups and other stakeholders.
  7. Be involved in the school/college ongoing self-evaluation of its effectiveness and monitor and evaluate as required.
  8. To keep abreast of trends and developments in education, especially those relevant to the duties and responsibilities of the post.

The St Rose’s Experience

  1. Receive Annual Performance Development Reviews from your line manager and regular support during the year.
  2. Organise and carry out trips following the correct procedures.
  3. Be involved in social occasions such as drink times and lunch duties.
  4. Support students with additional medical needs through tasks such as, but not limited to enteral feeding and helping students with their drinks and lunch after dysphagia training.
  5. Assist with manual handling, after training for example, pushing or driving wheelchairs around school/college and when out in the community.
  6. Be flexible enough to work with students of all ages wherever required within St Rose’s and St Martin’s.
  7. Support the school/college by complying with policies and procedures set by the Leadership and Management Team and/or the governing body.
  8. Undertake other reasonable duties and responsibilities necessary for the smooth running of the school/college that are determined by the Leadership Management Team.
  9. Fulfil the conditions of employment for teachers as laid down in the latest Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document.
