About the Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home
The Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home (CDCH) is a charitable organisation that exists to ensure that animals who have been abused, neglected, and abandoned get the care that they need to make their journey to a safe and loving forever home. A critical part of the organisation’s success is income generation through our 9 shops operating in a range of locations throughout the Cotswolds. Income generated through the shops is used to directly support our charitable work ensuring that no animal is left to suffer because of cost.
Our retail team are passionate about our shops and our products, with a focus on sustainability and upcycling, alongside excellent customer service resulting in exceptional results for the organisation.
This is an exciting time to join the retail management team at CDCH. The pandemic has reaffirmed the need for us to ensure that our organisation is resilient and can adapt to changing contexts. We are looking for a candidate who has enthusiasm, drive, and innovative thinking as well the ability to have attention to detail regarding good governance and procedural compliance. We are currently planning the development of a new retail strategy and we would love for the successful candidate to play a key role in this activity.
Main purpose of the role is to:
- Ensure the organisation has a resilient revenue stream through retail operations in order for the organisation to continue to deliver its charitable mission
- Enable the delivery of the retail operations through remote and in-person leadership to the organisation’s shops. This will include support to, and deputising for, the Retail Operations Manager in delivering the organisations retail objectives
- Support the development & implementation of the new retail strategy
Our ideal candidate will:

- Have strong leadership and motivational skills, with the drive and ambition to exceed budget targets
- Have the ability to be flexible in their approach to work, including prioritisation of a number of different – and sometimes competing – tasks and requirements
- Be a motivational team player and team builder, who recognises and nurtures the potential of our people
- Be highly organised with outstanding time management and the ability to meet deadlines and optimise support to all shops
- Be able to demonstrate commercial acumen and analytical skills through analysing performance and support in the development of strategies to deliver growth.
Essential skills & experience:
- Evidence of leading, directing and motivating a retail team
- Proven track record of delivering sales and profit targets in a multi-site retail environment
- Leadership and line management experience including working with, and celebrating, diversity
- Working knowledge of human resources and health and safety standards and processes
- Stock management
- Experience of recruitment and development of staff (both paid and voluntary)
- Working knowledge of project management skills and competencies
- Good IT skills (including use of MS Office suite)
- A flexible approach to working
Duties of post holder (non-exhaustive):
Governance and continuous improvement
- Assessment, and delivery, of the support requirements of our shops to enable them to perform to their potential
- Be a driver of continuous improvement through shop visits, compliance audits and supporting shop improvement plans
- Collation of performance reports and improvement plans
- Develop and trial new initiatives within shops to support the development of wider reaching campaigns, including scoping and championing new goods initiatives
- Management of a range of service level agreements - including recycling collections - ensuring best value for money and high levels of service delivery
- Enable to shops to develop their use of Ebay to grow incremental sales and maximise item value
- Champion and role mode community engagement to develop stock donations, volunteer participation and to drive awareness of shop activity (via social media and other methods)
Workforce
- Recruitment & induction of new staff
- Ongoing training and development of retail team members (paid and voluntary)
- Growing the organisational capacity through engaging shop managers in strategies to increase volunteer numbers and capabilities within the shops
- Undertaking staff 1-2-1’s and appraisals which enable our staff to feel valued, recognised and supported
- Based on shop needs (including vacancies and sickness cover), the post holder will direct the activity of Retail Relief Managers to ensure good management coverage across all shops
- Enable our staff to see the value in Gift Aid and quality donations to maximise organisational income.
Accountable to: Retail Operations Manager
Hours
- Due to the nature of the role, there is a requirement for the successful candidate to work flexibly
- The post holder will work a 37.5 hour week (flexing across Monday-Sunday)
- Employees are actively encouraged to take a 30-minute lunch break each day.
