Teacher of History with RS

Cheltenham

Start Date: 1st September 2025
Responsible to: Head of Department

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Cheltenham Bournside School as a Teacher of History. We are looking to appoint a teacher of History (with ability to teach RS being desirable) to join a lively, high performing and enthusiastic History Department. The successful candidate will be a key part of the team, who will teach History to highly motivated and talented pupils from Year 7 to 13. You will be joining a History department consisting of the Head of History and four other teachers all of whom work closely as a team, collaborating with each other through sharing resources and by discussing pedagogy and teaching ideas on a daily basis.

A balanced History programme, incorporating most of the features of the National Curriculum, is taught to students in Year 7, 8 and 9. Wherever possible the students are taught by specialist teachers at Key Stage 3. We regularly have 5 classes in each GCSE year group with students following the Edexcel specification for the two-year course. We study Crime through time; the American West; the Anglo-Saxons and Normans; and Weimar & Nazi Germany. Results at GSCE are outstanding in absolute and value-added terms with 37% of students receiving a GSCE grade 7 or higher in 2024. Students of comparative ability got a grade and a half higher at Bournside than they would have done an average elsewhere.

A large number of students go on to study History at A-Level, where we follow the Edexcel course, and post-18 the numbers that choose History courses at university are in stark contrast to national norms. Progress of students is above the national average and in the top 25% of the country at A Level with 60% of students receiving an A* - B grade and 84% A* -C in 2024.

The post would be an ideal opportunity for a new entrant to the profession although equally attractive to a more experienced colleague. We have a positive commitment to supporting Early Career Teachers and a comprehensive staff development programme.
