The Role
We are seeking a Special Educational Needs Lead for pupils aged 3-18, who is resourceful, resilient and creative, but above all cares about the needs of the individual. This is not just about teaching academic subjects, it is about educating the whole child, within a homely atmosphere, equipping them for their future career pathways.
The Person
A kind and caring personality with the drive to ensure that pupils with additional needs are equipped with the strategies in order to thrive and be successful at Rendcomb.
The Department
Learning Development is set within a cottage, attached to the Sixth Form Centre at Rendcomb College. It has a garden and kitchen, where pupils regularly take responsibility for looking after the outdoor area, in addition to baking during activities. There are two full-time specialist teachers and two part time teachers who teach across the age groups from 3-18 years of age. IT forms an important part of the department, with pupils using assistive technology working on Microsoft Teams and other software.
Person Specification
• PGCE and Qualified teacher status with a specialization in special education (Dyslexia) including at
least a Level 7/Post graduate qualification in assessment with current knowledge of Examination Access Arrangements Online
• Excellent knowledge of assistive technology
• A minimum of 5 years classroom teaching experience
• Proven experience in working with students with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD and high functioning Autism.
• Experience of teaching 1:1 pupils with additional needs across the curriculum
• Strong leadership and communication skills.
• Understanding of best practices in inclusive education
• Experience of both Primary and Senior Curriculum will be an advantage
Department Management
To give a decisive lead to the College SEN provision and impart direction and drive
To set clear expectations about professional conduct and working relationships among department staff, ensuring effective delegation of responsibilities and tasks
To support the appraisal of SEN staff in line with school policy and use the process to develop the personal and professional effectiveness of staff
To ensure that all SEN staff receive continuous professional development by agreeing professional
development targets and by putting in place appropriate training and support
To ensure that the Departmental Development Plan includes training needs of the year and that these are communicated to Deputy Head Academic
To ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place to induct new SEN staff to the department
To play an active role in the selection of new Departmental Staff
To attend, and play an active role in, Heads of Department meetings and at SMT Meetings
Teaching and Learning
• Demonstrate significant knowledge and understanding of curriculum across the key stages
• Demonstrate an extensive knowledge and well-informed understanding of the assessment requirements and arrangements for the subjects/curriculum areas, with sound understanding of current Examination Access Arrangements Online
• Work to ensure that all pupils achieve their academic potential and personal development in and out of the classroom
• Plan and deliver well-organised, challenging and inspiring lessons
• Demonstrate an extensive knowledge and understanding of how to use and adapt a range of teaching, learning and behaviour management strategies
• Be flexible, creative and adept at designing learning within lessons and across lessons that is effective and consistently well-matched to learning objectives and the needs of learners
• To monitor reports for SEN pupils
• To establish and maintain a positive learning environment by regular monitoring and evaluation of the work of SEN staff and pupils
• To attend open days
• Attend evening functions where required
• To build links with Feeder Schools, especially with the SENDCOs
• To provide information to prospective parents and meet with them prior to entry testing where required
• To keep up-to-date with CPD issues for the whole staff
• To liaise with Departments regarding the provision of SEND strategies to support the School’s inclusive approach
• To liaise with all pastoral staff through the Deputy Head Pastoral
• To ensure students with Statements and EHCPs are fully included within the life of the school
• To write and keep under review the Development Plan which sets out the priorities for the long-term development and resourcing of the subject.
• To evaluate the SEN students’ academic results on an annual basis, drawing on a range of prior attainment data to assess pupil progress
• To use data to analyse pupil's potential, to support the setting of challenging targets for them and to provide the support necessary for their achievement
• To stay alert to development within the field of SEND and to advise SLT where necessary
• To provide guidance and training of department staff on effective teaching and learning methods which take account of pupils' learning preferences and their individual learning needs.
Marking and assessment
• Demonstrate effective assessment, monitoring and recording strategies, set challenging learning objectives and monitor learners’ progress and levels of attainment
• Provide pupils and parents/guardians with timely, accurate and constructive feedback on progress and areas for development
• Create Individual Learning Strategies(ILS), My Profile/My Plan and My Plan Plus where necessary with due regard to the SEN Code of Practice
• Make applications to the Joint Council for Qualifications for Access Arrangements in line with guidelines, following assessment
Other
• Contribute significantly, where appropriate, to implementing departmental and workplace policies and practice
• Contribute to the professional development of colleagues through coaching and mentoring, demonstrating effective practice, and providing advice and feedback
• Promote collaboration and work effectively as a team member
• Support enrichment and outreach programmes for the department
• Be part of the Senior Management Team attending weekly meetings
• Monitor the Academic Reviews across the Key stages
• Work with the Admissions Team to ensure that pupils applying for places can thrive at Rendcomb and feedback in formation in a timely manner
• Manage the budget for the Learning Development Department across both Junior and Senior Schools
• Manage the recharges for lessons within the department across both Junior and Senior Schools
• Diagnostically assess pupils, or create referrals when necessary to outside agencies
• Manage EHCP process and Annual Reviews
• Manage the financial provision mapping of EHCPs
• Update and manage the policies of the department, including the necessary policies for Access Arrangements online
• Manage the provision for pupils on the SEN register in examinations both internal and external
• Regularly update iSAMs, with a working knowledge of the SEN register
• Create the timetable for the Learning Development Department

The School
Rendcomb College is a successful co-educational HMC day and boarding school in the Cotswolds and this is a wonderful opportunity for a dynamic and inspirational candidate to join the College at an exciting time of change. Rendcomb College was founded in 1920 by Frederick Noel Hamilton Wills, whose family have maintained an active part of the school including significant financial endowment and governance.

Rendcomb has evolved, developed and grown over the years and is now a thriving co-educational day and boarding School for 3-18 year olds totalling some 400 pupils.
The College owns some 200 acres of land including the Deer Park and the “Wilderness” which is home to our Forest School and an integral part of our Outdoor Education provision in the Junior School. The College’s ten acres of pitches benefit from far-reaching and astounding views. An open air swimming pool lies next to the College buildings. The school boasts four new hard surface tennis courts, gym, all weather astro-turf and sports hall; all of these facilities are used by Junior and Senior School pupils. Recent whole college developments include a state of the art Performing Arts Centre at the heart of the campus, new 6th Form Centre and Junior Day and Boarding House.

All staff attend Open Days, Taster Days and other College events as well as training and INSET days and are expected to engage with their own Continued Professional Development.
Boarding duties in the evening may be available and are separately remunerated.
