Job description
The Speech and Language Therapy team at National Star has a key role in ensuring that students gain the skills and confidence to communicate effectively as part of their journey towards living as independently as possible.

How satisfying would it be to think that you had played a part in helping a young person with a disability to find their voice?

We’re looking to recruit a new Speech and Language Therapy Assistant to work alongside our experienced Speech and Language Therapists, supporting students to develop their skills so that they can express their opinions, make choices and communicate with family and friends. This is a full time role working 44 hours a week over 39 weeks (term time only), however part time hours may be considered. Please talk to us about your availability.

We’re expecting you will have an interest in working with people with a broad range of physical and learning disabilities, including Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, and Acquired Brain Injury. It may be that you already have experience of providing direct and indirect speech and language therapy support.

A knowledge of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC), Makaton and/or Intensive Interaction would help you to hit the ground running in this role. It goes without saying that you will also have excellent observational and communications skills and a creative and flexible approach to work.

Multi-disciplinary working is key to the success of our college so being a team player is a must-have attribute as you will find yourself working alongside our occupational therapy, physiotherapy, education, nursing and residential teams.

Your creativity will come to the fore as you support the Speech and Language Therapy team in producing personalised resources to support students’ progression and achievement, including programming AAC devices.

Working as a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant will give you an invaluable insight into the importance of Speech and Language Therapy, especially if you are considering a long-term career in this allied healthcare profession. Some of our current Speech and Language Therapy Assistants joined the team having worked as care and support workers. Others have worked in learning support roles or had a desire to gain clinical experience before deciding whether speech and language therapy was the right long-term career choice for them.

Whatever your motivation to join National Star’s SLT team you will be supported to develop in your role, learning from some of the UK’s leading speech and language therapy professionals.
