Assistant Youth Work Team Leader (15 hours per week)
Stroud
The Frith Youth Centre in Bussage, near Stroud, is currently seeking an enthusiastic Assistant Youth Work Team Leader. Your role will be to support the Youth Work Team Leader both in running and delivering youth work sessions and when called upon, to lead projects, sessions or work within the community as deputy for the Youth Work Team Leader.
The sessions are currently held on Mondays and Thursdays (3.30pm – 7.30pm) and Fridays (3.30pm – 6.30pm). With these being your predominant working days and times, there will also be some scope to do outreach work within the community and attend meetings which may fall outside of this schedule.
Job description:
- To assist and occasionally lead in the delivery of a successful program of youth work, encompassing activities and learning aspects for the benefit of the young people.
- To prepare for the youth work sessions, including setting up, packing away and cleaning the building before, during and after a session.
- To plan activities and projects for the sessions and for the wider project.
- To support the lead youth worker in administrative duties such as session planning, sign in forms, accident reporting and evaluations after every session, occasionally being solely responsible for these duties in the absence of the youth work lead. Support with grant finding / funding applications may be required.
- Deputise as the Safeguarding Lead and have a duty of care and a responsibility for the safeguarding and welfare of the young people attending. To report and action any disclosures and concerns as necessary.
- Develop positive, professional relationships with young people and make regular contact with them in order to identify and assess their social and informal educational needs.
- Advocate for young people in all aspects of their development and lives, encourage and empower them to make choices and decisions, take ownership of the activities and the delivery within the sessions, and within aspects of their own lives
- To work in a way which focusses on the social, physical, intellectual and emotional development of the young people who attend.
- To motivate and support assistant youth workers, volunteers and visitors/ carers within the session.
- To increase awareness of the Youth Centre’s facilities and activities for young people and for the community. This includes the use of social media and the website.
- To undertake responsibilities within the community, such as liaising with local schools or meeting with partnering organisations where required.
Person specification
Essential:
- Experience working with young people, in any setting.
- Ability to form and sustain positive relationships with young people.
- Excellent organisational and leadership skills. Must have the ability to plan activities for the sessions and be confident to contribute accordingly with the running of activities and supervision throughout the youth club.
- Have a creative outlook and approach when working with young people.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills. Be able to communicate with relevant team members through a busy youth work session and be confident in your approach when meeting and supporting young people.
- Must possess a non-discriminatory approach to working with people. To have an open-minded attitude, be committed to equality of opportunity and a desire to empower young people.
- An enthusiasm to work with and support the growth and development of young people.
- Knowledge of general issues facing young people.
Desirable:
- Experience in community work
- Hold a qualification in youth work, support, counselling or another relevant field.
- Experience in working with young people with challenging behaviours.
- Knowledge of local issues facing young people.
Start date: The start date is dependent on the success recruitment of the Youth Work Team Leader. We aim for this to be January 2024, but cannot specify yet.
